Professional Development in Marketing,
Massey University

Massey University offers a range of papers and qualifications that may be taken extramurally (by correspondence) or on campus. This means that you can either take individual papers that meet specific needs, or complete a qualification, while you work full time. As an extramural student we will send you a full set of study material including a study guide, readings and an administration guide, and give you access to web-ct, a web-based teaching tool. You can use web-ct to discuss your readings and assignments, and ask questions of your lecturers much as you would in a tutorial.

The Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (GradDipBusStuds) is for students with no prior university qualification. The GradDipBusStuds is 120 credits, the equivalent of one year of full time study, although it is designed to be taken part time and extramurally by students who have relevant work experience. To have your Diploma endorsed in Marketing, six of the total of eight papers must be in Marketing. This set of papers is very similar to those in the Marketing Major of a Bachelor of Business Studies degree.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Administration (PGDipBusAdmin) is for students with a completed degree in any discipline. For those students with little or no prior marketing there is a set of four ‘conversion’ papers which are introductory marketing at postgraduate level. The PGDipBusAdmin is 120 credits, the equivalent of one year of full time study, and may be taken as one year of full time study on campus, or more often, the equivalent part time and extramurally. Marketing papers are 15 credits each. To have your Postgraduate Diploma endorsed in Marketing, 90 of the 120 credits must be in Marketing. Those students who do well in the PGDipBusAdmin and wish to continue to masterate level can go on to a Master of Management in Marketing.

One of the papers that you may take as part of your PGDipBusAdmin is 156.718 Social Marketing.

156.718 Social Marketing begins by reviewing social marketing theory before applying this to a range of social behaviours, including smoking cessation programmes, donation behaviour; green marketing, and road safety. In addition, the paper examines a range of social and ethical issues affecting marketing practice, including advertising to children, the link between fast-food advertising and obesity, and the promotion of prescription medicines to end-users.

This paper is taught by Professor Janet Hoek. Teaching materials include a range of current campaign materials sourced from New Zealand and internationally. Assessment involves analysis of a recent NZ social marketing campaign, a report investigating a topic of interest to each student, and a final exam. The report topic provides an opportunity for students to develop an area of special interest and can be developed into a Research report or Masterate thesis in subsequent years.

This paper is of particular relevance to people working in health promotion and the not-for-profit sector, and provides a thought-provoking complement to traditional marketing papers.

Entry requirement for 156.718 is admission to Massey University at postgraduate level, and passes in both 156.701 Postgraduate Marketing Management and 156.702 Postgraduate Consumer Behaviour, or equivalent.
